Thing 10: Wikis

I was not aware of the vast number of subjects available through Wikis. I found a one with book revues to bookmark.

Thing 9 - Collaborating

I have used Google Docs several times. A disadvantage is seems is that collaborators all need to have google accounts. But it is great for my own documents that I start at my work computer and then am at the reference computer. I can just keep working on the same document (like story time plans) without saving each time to a flash drive. I love that aspect.

Creating the slideshow

I thought I was creating an account for Picture Trail, but ended up in "smilebox" which was OK - but then yet another account! There were too many choices, and still not exactly what I wanted for my slide show. I might come back to this when I have more time. A fun way to display each of the summer library program events.

Thing 7: Communication Tools

I already had experience with several of these tools: e-mail from a couple of different hosts; chat - not something I would use often for work in children's services at a public library, but I can see it for reference; Texting - I don't have a cell phone, but even if I did I don't think I would add on this feature. Webinar - I have participated in a group webinar, but have also signed up for one personally through Minitex. Meebo is cool, but again not something I would use in children's services at this time.

Thing 6 - Create a Trading Card - done

This was easier to do after the "toy" I created in thing 5. Still, when I saved my creation, I had no idea where it saved to, and so redid the card and shared it directly from the website where it was created.

Thing 5 finished

This was fun but time consuming. What I really learned was how to post something from Flickr (or other web photos)onto my blog. The cube I created has to be printed and folded, so not exactly what I was thinking I was doing. But it is cool - I will print it sometime and fold it.

Flickr

I explored Flickr today. It meant yet another e-mail address, but worth it to join the 23 things group on this photo sharing. I uploaded some photos from a couple of recent library events, which I put in sets and tagged. It was fun, and I think useful, but quite time consuming to title, tag and describe.

Thing 3 - RSS feed

I used Google Reader to sign up for RSS. I did a browse search for bee keeping sites and chose several that seemed educational. I then looked at some of the entries in each of the sites, and decided that one of the sites I had chosen had more posts than I wanted to deal with. So I figured out how to unsubscribed. I like this feature for keeping up to date on a subject, and I like that when I sign in to g-mail, I can just open google reader without an additional sign in.

Thing 2 completed

Video is not my favorite form of communication, but I plugged in headphones and took mute off my computer to watch listen. I was familiar with some of the tools and terms that were talked about but some were new to me. I can see that understanding this technology will be helpful for me in connecting with my public (children and young adults)

23 things on a stick

Here is my first entry for 23 things on a stick. I don't have a magic school bus, but I'm going to take this virtual van for ride....22 stops left.
